My name is Jillian Darlington. I am an entrepreneur, founder and CEO of a new app for moms, and the single mom of my 7 year old son Taylor. I was a stay at home mom when my son was born. A couple years later, I went through a grueling divorce and needed to find a way to support myself and my son so I purchased my favorite indoor playground. The flexibility of owning my own business allowed me to be able to spend time with him during the days and still be the type of mom that I wanted to be. As Taylor entered elementary school, I decided to sell the indoor playground and invested the money in my new business venture, the MomCo app.
The MomCo app is a new app that helps moms connect with other moms as well as the businesses that cater to them and their children. This app was truly inspired by my own life experiences. As a young mom, I worked tirelessly going to playdates and classes with my son just hoping to click with another cool mom to be friends with. After my divorce, I downloaded the Tinder app. It made me think, “Why doesn’t something like this exist for moms to locate other moms that live close to them?” This coupled with my experiences as a small business owner is how the concept for the MomCo app was formed. A GEO location based social networking app for moms to find friendship and support. Also, the perfect platform for any business that caters to women and children to be able to list themselves so all the moms in their community can easily find them. The MomCo app solves issues for moms and small business owners and was officially launched on April 2, 2015. (www.momcoapp.com)
As a single mom and entrepreneur, my days are 24/7 and nuts, but here is an average day in my existence:
6:51am: Alarm goes off. Get up, get Taylor a Zbar and juice, make his lunch, pack his backpack and at 7:25am, it’s off to school
8am: Get home from drop off. Check pilates schedule, send some emails, call my Co-Founder Beth and map out work schedule for the week
8:20am: Talk to my Director of Marketing and Advertising Nicole about our plan for the blog for the week as well as what our Brand Ambassadors will be doing for the week.
9:00am: Talk with my CTO John about some updates that we are incorporating into the next app update. Also email my lawyers about finishing up some contracts. Clearly not making it to Pilates today.
10am: Finally had a shower and got ready while listening to the Start Up podcast by Alex Blumberg. It is hilarious!
11am: My COO Beth arrives and we hunker down in the office to get down to some serious work. So much to do and so little time.
11:30pm: Talk to our new friends at Avery & Austin about the details of our new partnership. They are an awesome company that makes boxes that helps moms create the Perfect Playdate.
12:50pm: My door bell rings while I’m still talking on the phone. It’s Carly from Car’s Jars. She is delivering my wonderful and healthy salads for the week. Having these salads in my fridge keeps me from eating junk. They are easy and yummy so I eat them instead of hands full of Pirate Booty.
1:55pm: Go grab Taylor from school.
2:30pm: Back home. Taylor is happy and playing. I hunker back down in the office with Beth and it’s back to work. We work until about 6. Mean while I’m making snacks and making sure Taylor is happy. No way I could have done all this with a toddler. Now that he is 7, I can actually get stuff done while he is home. THANK GOD.
4:00pm: Catch up on social media. Spend way too much time...where did the last hour go?
6:30pm: Beth leaves and I realize that I had forgotten to put Taylor’s fish sticks in the oven 20 minutes prior. Taylor is soooooooo hungry, according to him so I make him a sandwich while I prepare the rest of his dinner. Surprisingly he still eats all of it, even after the sandwich appetizer.
7:30pm: Taylor and I play two games on Candyland. He murders me both times. That makes his day. I didn’t let him win either. I am unbeatable at Trouble but this kid rules Memory and Candyland.
8pm: Shower for the kiddo followed by reading. He reads me a book and then I read him one. I fetch me some water for him and he is done for the day.
9pm: I am done working for the day. I turn on the TV and start watching The Real Housewives. Have an idea for work pop in my head, so need to write it down before I forget..then back to TV.
11:00 Start texting some friends, then I shove my phone under the pillow next to me and fall fast asleep by 11:30pm.
